Introduction to Stata

Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

The goal of this workshop was to familiarize individuals with the Stata statistical software package for use in quantitative research. By the end of the workshop, individuals should have been able to import and export data, clean and manage data, conduct standard statistical tests (e.g., correlation, t-test, regression), and produce a graph.

Introduction to Structural Equation Modeling

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

This workshop intended to provide a starting place for understanding the basics of structural equation modeling, including when you should consider using it and some of the basic terminology associated with the method.

How to Code in Stata Without Really Trying: Macros, Loops, and Other Tricks of the Trade

Wednesday, April 25th, 2018

Here you’ll find a zip-file with materials from the How to Code in Stata Without Really Trying Workshop on April 24, 2018. Included are the dataset and syntax. The dataset is for instructional purposes only; it’s something I used for a course I taught on Stata programming. While there wasn’t enough time to talk about additional topics or challenges you’ve encountered in your own work, feel free to shoot me an email and we can troubleshoot.

Tableau Workshop

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

I will share the slides from the presentation as well – but for now, here are the two excel files i will be using to show you how to get started in Tableau, in case you want to follow along.

Regression Discontinuity Workshop

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Here you’ll find a zip-file with materials from the Regression Discontinuity Workshop on November 30, 2017. The Stata code uses made-up data to produce common analyses in RD studies. The code is somewhat complicated, so feel free to post questions in the comments or email me directly. The zip-file also includes the slides from the workshop, an article I asked participants to read before the workshop, and 3 user-written Stata commands. The user-written Stata commands are useful in determining the optimal bandwidth (-cvob- & -rdob-) and graphing treatment effects across multiple bandwidths (-pobw-).

Mediation and Moderation

Tuesday, October 17th, 2017

This workshop is an overview of the concepts behind mediation and moderation.  It is not intended to be an in-depth statistical discussion of this topic, but a starting point for understanding how and when you might test these concepts using statistical modeling.

I’ve attached a Powerpoint from the presentation here (see notes on slides for more info).  Video available upon request.

A few reminders from questions that arose during the presentation:

  • It matters whether your variables are categorical or continuous for the various statistical tests you do to confirm mediation/moderation. Refer to other resources to choose the appropriate tests.
  • If you’re trying to decide whether you’re testing mediation or moderation, draw a picture.
    • If you think the relationship between X & Y exists because X predicts some other variable (Z) which predicts Y, then you’re probably interested in mediation
    • If you think the relationship between X & Y is different for different groups (race/gender/ed level/etc.), then you might be interested in moderation
  • Theory is the basis for all decisions you make in terms of what you want to test.

Instrumental Variables Workshop

Wednesday, December 14th, 2016

Here you’ll find slides and Stata code from the Instrumental Variables Workshop on November 29, 2016. In the code, I demonstrated the ivregress command. This command may be used when the outcome and endogenous treatment condition are continuous. There are, however, other instrumental commands in Stata:

ivpoisson: for Poisson models (count)
ivprobit: for probit models (binary)
ivtobit: for Tobit models (censored)
xtivreg: for fixed-effects or random-effects (multilevel) models

Feel free to post questions in the comments.
